This week for Jen Rzasa Tuesday #altenewchallengelive with the theme pattern clash.  Create a project using two or more patterns that would not normally go together, and make them work beautifully. Play with color, scale, and placement to bring harmony to the mix. 

For my card I used cardstock, fabric tape, pattern paper, stamping, and pitcher cut out with metallic cardstock. The kraft carstock was embossed with an embossing folder. 

I also had to make a tag, because that's me.  I do like my tags.  I punched out different size circles with several pattern papers, and glued them to the top of this oversized tag.  I added a scallop black circle.  The bottom of the tag was embossed with an embossing folder.  I also glued on a strip of washi tape, and ribbon below all the paper circles.  I made what I call a funky house.  That just means it is created with different papers, and cardstocks.

Embossing folders are a great tool for making creative cards.  

Basic instructions:

1. Masked off section of card with post it note tape.

2.  Blended color inside the masked area.

3.  Remove the post it note tape to reveal the colored section.

4.  Run card panel through Big Kick (any machine will work) with embossing folder.

tip:  spritz the back of the card panel with a little water. this prevents the card from cracking with 3D embossing folders.

5.  Adhere embossed card panel to card layer a little bigger, then to base card.

6.  Add saying and self sticking gems.

7.  Run the flap of envelope through Big Kick with embossing folder.

Monster pop ups

stamps used:  Catherine Pooler monster ghouls stamp set/dies

Pop up cards are a long time favorite of mine. 

measurements:

base card: 4 1/4" x 11 score and fold in half to form card.

pop up mechanism: cut a strip of cardstock and score evenly four times. Glue the two ends together to form cube.  Cube will be the pop up mechanism that will fold flat inside card.

Stamp and color all the monsters, die cut and adhere or mount to card. Inside card adhere the pop up cube at the folded score line of the base card.  Adhere saying or monster to pop up cube.  Add other layers to card as desired.  You can also see on my card I embossed one of the front layers for more dimension.

Still trying out card sketches

Yes, I'm still trying to get comfortable using a card sketch for a starting point to create a card.  This card sketch is from Pixel Maven's Retreat blog challenge.

For my card I pretty much cased the card sketch except I decided to add a little dimension to my card by running it through an embossing folder.  The embossing folder gave it some extra texture.  I used the new Unity stamp co. tulip stamp and stencil for the main focal image.

Blue flower sketch card

This is a sketch card I made for Pixel Maven's retreat blog for the month of April.  I know I've said this before but I will say it again (because this is my blog, teeheeehee) I'm not a real fan of sketches but I keep trying.

This card uses Altenew Calming Reverie stamp/die set.  This flower measures approximately 3 1/2" x 3 1/4" so that would fit most of an A2 card. If you look at my card, you will see that I cut off some of this flower to mimic the sketch you see below.  

I also put my image on the opposite side of the card as the sketch ... we will say that is a "left-handed thing".  I also used an embossed layer instead of pattern paper just to give it another effect.

3D layering card with video

Yes, I'm still having fun with SU Forever Fern stamp/die set.  These slimline cards are for my local creative card crew group.  Gone are the days when we would meet up for lunch and swap our cards, but it is what it is now.  We still see each other once a month in a zoom meeting so that's nice.  Ok, back to my card...the theme for March is 3D layering so what better stamp set for layering than Forever Fern.  I did a slimline card because I wanted to also use a 3D embossing folder which has an opening at the top fold.  This opening works great to feed a piece of 3" x 8" card through it to make a continuous pattern.  This was a fun discovery I made when I got this 3D embossing folder.

Slimline cards are all the rage right now, but I can remember making them years ago, then we called them something like tall cards. 

Measurement:

base card - 6 1/2" x 8 1/4"  folded 3 1/4" x 8 1/4"

purple layer - 3 1/8" x 8"

ribbon wave 3D folder (Altenew) - 7 3/8" x 2 3/8"

Check back here for details how I made the embossing folder fit the length of the card. Here is another slimline card with embossed layer.  I used a couple of the new date ink colors from Catherine Pooler stamp company.

Slimline cards

Still having fun making slimline cards, and here are two using Altenew Camellia BAF, 3D embossing folders Ribbon Waves and Swirl Motif.  The fun thing I discovered with these new 3D embossing folder are they have a cut out slot at the top of the folder where it folds in half.  What I did was cut out a slimline layer, then run the layer in the 3D folder, BUT the fun thing I discovered is ... if you slide that layer through the cut out slot you can have the design fit the slimline layer!!!!!  Don't know if that is what it was intended for but it was a fun, and exciting discovery for me.  If you are interested in me making a little video with this technique discovery ... please leave me a comment on this post.

Trick or Treats

 TRICK OR TREATS!

Just a fun and easy Halloween card to share with you today.

stamps used:  Stampin' Up stamps/punches

Base card is white with an embossed layer of spider webs on an orange cardstock.  Tied a ribbon around the embossed card then adhered to black layer that was both adhered to white card.  Punched out the bats first with black cardstock to used behind the stamped/punched out bats for a shadow.  Saying stamped with black ink and punched out with circle punch and layered onto scallop punch then a black circle punch.  Everything is adhered to the embossed web layer to finish the card.

Ferns are still forever

I just can't get enough of this stamp set and dies!  For all three of these cards I stamped a lot of the images, then die cut them ... so ... I have a little bowl on my table with all the die cuts.  Now I can just pick and use whatever die cuts I want to make a card or two or three or more.  LOL!  

I did want to point out on the second card a fun idea to add a circle sentiment, but cut out another circle frame and place it behind ..... but ..... off set.  What do you think?  a good idea or not?  Well, I like it and thought it gave another dimension to the card besides the embossed layer behind it.

Green card is what I call a basic card.  Butterscotch card is a step up from a basic card.

Green card:

1.  Die cut green banner then in smaller banner die cut DSP.  Tie ribbon around banners then adhere to cream card.

2.  Stamp and fussy cut tea cup and mount with foam mounting tape to card over banners.

Butterscotch card:

1.  repeat step 1 from green card except use butterscotch colors.

2.  run a separate piece of cream card, through Big Kick (or whatever machine you own) with dotted embossing folder.

3.  adhere embossed piece to cream note card

4.   repeat step 2 from green card but again in butterscotch colors.

5.  stamp image onto cream envelope.

The stepped up version of this card is for my local card swapping group for March.

Sunflower

This card started out as a tag that was around 6 inches long but I cut it down so I could add it to a regular note card.  Yes, it started out as a tag that I was helping my friend make 50 or so of them for her sister's birthday.  They are going to go on a bag of treats.  So we made a some extra so we could both make more on our own.  I took home 5 of the tags that were just stamped with the big sunflower stamp.  First I cut the tag down to fit a note card then I added either self-sticking gems or Nuvo drops to the center of the flower.  On the bottom of the tag I added some grass I punched out of an old border punch I have in my stash of paper punches.  On the card I embossed a piece of cardstock with a SU bubble embossing folder next adhere the tag and I'm done.  Simple but effective.  They will make nice birthday cards.

Hibiscus celebrate floating frame cards

Here are some more floating frame cards.  This technique is addictive and it also gives you 2 for 1 cards another words you get a second card out of the left-over piece that is die cut.

Three of these cards are birthday cards with a happy birthday also stamped inside the card.  The first card shown in picture is what I call a note card with the inside blank and a general thinking of you saying on the front of the card.  In this case the saying is a kindness phrase.  If you look at the card on the bottom right of the picture you will see I used an embossing folder for some texture to that card.  You can see more of my floating image cards here and here. 

Basic instructions:

I began by stamping and die-cutting  images from Altenew  Build-A-Flower Hibiscus stamp set.  I arranged them close together on a piece of 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" cardstock. They are not adhered to the cardstock - just laying freely on top of it. Next, carefully lay a piece of Glad Press 'n Seal (available at most grocery stores) over the images to hold them in place. Trim the edges even with the edge of the cardstock. I used a  circle and an oval die to cut out the center. Now it's time to remove the cardstock piece. The Press 'n Seal stays adhered to the die-cuts, you are only removing the cardstock backing. With the die cuts still held in place by the Press 'n Seal add foam mounting tape to the back of all the die cut images. This will make the die-cuts "float" on the finished card. Here's my frame attached to the card front using foam mounting tape.  After you have the frame stuck down, it's time to carefully pull off the Press 'n Seal.  Next I stamped a saying in the center of the frames.

Baby time

My friend's daughter had a bouncing baby boy earlier this month so I went into my stash of stamps.....and there are lots of them BUT ... none really suitable for baby cards.  what to do...check out pinterest and there you go ... found a card (sorry don't remember original name of card)  I could case with my supplies.  The first card that is yellow and grey went to Sam (mother's name)...used some pattern paper on top, ribbon in the middle, and stamped spots on yellow cardstock.  Second card went to my friend (mother of daughter) ... used cable knit embossing folder for white layer then stamped and die cut swirly bird to mount on knit layer.  stamped the saying first before running through Big Kick.  thank you to pinterest for creative idea.

Here is a fun snowman card.  Hopefully we have had our last snowfall for the year!!!  As my friends know I'm not a winter person and always say I would have been happy if my parents emigrated to the south instead of here on the northeast.....but it is what it is and here I am sitting through ...... like I said ... hopefully the last snowfall of the year.  

Holiday at home

On my table I have left over pieces or background pieces I have created one time or another.  This is one of those pieces...the background piece is double embossed.  it's a diamond embossing folder that I added ink to then ran it thru my big kick...cleaned if off then add different color on opposite side and ran it thru big kick a second time.  viola ... double embossing folder.  stamped houses with trees in red ink on piece of white cardstock, cut it down and adhered it to embossed card.  stamped the image a second time and fussy cut the houses and mounted to card.  added silver washi tape, layered onto red note card to finish.

More Background Check day 5 - embossing folders

Two of these samples use embossing folders and one uses a scoring board which I don't own.  Let's start with the two embossing folder samples....1.  do normal embossing with a folder then spot color with a sponge dauber....blend color around the edges.  2.  put card with embossing folder through Big Kick twice leaving a blank space on the card.  Now for the diagonal card with color on the four corners ... I kinda placed card on my 12 personal trimmer and used my bone folder to make lines...not perfect but almost the same effect if I had a scoring tool board.  Still fun to make samples.

Here are my samples using embossing paste.  my favorite is the one with the mosaic triangle stencil where first you blend colors on card...used distress inks - seedless preserves, dusty concord and shaded lilac.  But did have fun with the circle stencil ... shaded with all green inks.  the last one is just the embossing paste swiped on card...let it dry then blended a couple of colors...distress seedless preserves and spiced marmalade....looks like a fire.
