Gird cards

I've been making grid cards since 2009 ... yes, that far back ... 17 years!  There are different names, and ways to do the grid technique. 
 

This most recent technique I saw Gina K  do on one of her weekly LIVE event.  This one uses masking paper to create the grid sections, but back in the day before maksing paper we used post it notes.  If you go here where I used post it notes.  You can type grid in the search bar, and a lot of post will show up for you to check out.

I did a technique that was popular years ago called grid technique. It's a fun and easy way to divide, or create sections on your cards, and tags.  You can look back  in this post to see grid technique, but if you type grid in search box a lot of posts will come up.  Here's a post showing the grid technique that I did way back in 2009!

Another masking technique for Jen Rzasa #altenewchallengelive.  

supplies used:  Altenew Retro Plantines, Enamel dots

I did a technique I have done years ago that, I think is called grid sections.  I masked off sections with masking paper, but you can also use post it notes.  You can see more here in this post.  Just type in grid, and you will see more cards with this technique.

Butterflies are beautiful flying creatures.

Faux Grid cards with video

This is another fun way to create grid, or Retiform cards.  I wanted to mention, that after I made all my Faux grid cards with the chalks, I sprayed them with a Fixative.  The Fixative just sets the chalks so they don't rub off.  Spray them outside, or in a well ventilated area.

Retiform cards/tags with a video

This is an old technique with a couple of twists along the way.  Basically Retiform is composed of crossing lines.  On my tags, I used a grey ink for the crossing lines, and different blues for the images.  Scroll down to the bottom of this post to see several more card samples using this technique.

Retiform birthday card

When I first learned how to make this card back in the year 1999 or 2000, we just called them grid cards.  A couple of years later the name was changed to Retiform. The meaning of RETIFORM is composed of crossing lines and interstices.

For this style card you can use any stamp images, whether they are solid or line images.  It doesn't even matter if the images don't normally go together.  

For my cards, though, all the images are from one stamp set.  No, I'm wrong the saying is from a company that has unfortunately gone out of business.  

The simplest way I can describe how to do this technique is block off section with post it notes, then sponge on color, just at the edge of the post it note.  Remove the post it note to reveal the section.

A twist on an old technique.  Years ago at a convention, I saw a demonstration of a person using small Marvy square ink pads ... doing DTP (direct to paper) on a card that was sectioned off with post it notes.  Then without removing the post it notes she stamped inside the grids.  When you remove the post its you are left with a fun grid background.  Check out these posts grid technique, 2014 post, another post from 2014 on grid technique. I learned this technique way back in 1999 or 2000 before all the fancy picture taking phones.

Some of these cards are for an upcoming card swap I do with local friends.

Basic instructions:

Masked off a section at a time with post it notes.  Lay down stencil and add color through it then with same blending brush add a light layer of the same color over the stenciled section.  Remove the post its to reveal the first grid section.  Continue on doing the same thing to fill the card.  When done with all the stenciling you can die cut the card or just cut it out and layer onto folded card.  If you look at the card with the hello die cut ..... that is actually a 5" x 7" card but all the others are 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" cards.  For this technique you can use any of your inks you have in your stash.  I used CP inks because at the time they were on my table.

July is Buck Moon

basic instructions:

1.  masked off a circle to create a moon.  blended some gray inks to color the moon.

2.  around the moon I blended blues.

3.  stamped the buck/deer over the moon with black ink.

4.  stamped leaves around the edge with blue and white ink.

basic instructions:

Grid technique

1.  masked off sections with post it notes.  stippled some color off the edge of the post it note.

2.  after done stippling color I masked off one section at a time and stamped an image inside the section.

Above are the Sturgeon grid card before I made them into full cards.  As you can see I did them in all different colors.

Third night of stamping is all about faux layers and grid cards.  Faux layer cards always make a unique statement.  Grid cards allows you to let your imagination fly.
