Turning stamped images into paintings

Turning stamped images into paintings

I took a couple of Dina Wakley classes at Papercraft Clubhouse in Old Saybrook last month.

First class I took was called Turning stamped images into paintings.

Above pages from my art journal I worked on in class.  Used lots of paint, collage pictures, printed tissue papers, stencils, and a little with gloss sprays.

A couple of days after I got home from class, I got out my art journal, and played using the techniques I learned in class.  As you can see I used the green, and blue paints.  Funny how I used the same colors as in class ... at home, too.  I think I need to get different colors soon.

Thanks for stopping by.  Come back again soon.

Art journal - Dina Wakley #2

Here is some more play in my art journal after taking class with Dina Wakley.
Glued in stamped tissue paper onto watercolor paper.  stamped some inked up bubble wrap in the background and added a rub on that has been in my stash for ages.  On the burlap page I glued the scribble face we did in class as a exercise experiment.  Also used stencils with paint and saying printed on tissue paper.
A goofy selfie of the two of us after class.
Here is a look at the other side of the burlap page that had the scribble face.  On this side is a large tag that I stapled to it.  The tag is just a collage of a face I did in class and dies I had in my stash.  Again the background is from an inked up piece of bubble wrap.  the strip is kraft cardstock and washi tape.
That's it for this post but there will be more from my art journal in the future.
Thanks for stopping by.  come back again soon.

Art journal - Dina Wakley style

Here are some photos of my art journal after taking a class by Dina Wakley blog on June 1st.  I still have a lot to learn with painting these faces but I will keep trying.  I have been using old paints I had in my stash and they don't work exactly like Dina's paints we used in class.  I really need to get some of her paints because they just flowed and blended so nicely together.

left page - hand drawn face to emphasize highlights and shadows.  small face is a pic of the one Dina drew and the big one is the one I did really fast in class just to remember.
right side - face on tissue paper and glued into art journal.  painted in class with Dina's paints and stenciled around the face for fun.

me and Dina

left page - this face was on tissue paper then glued to art journal page.  painted at home with various paints in my stash.
right side - used scribble sticks and lots of water on canvas page.  will collage on it soon.

This is just the start ... more to come.
thanks for stopping by.  come back again soon.

String painting

String painting!
This is just what it is called string painting.

Go to your kitchen drawer and pull out that big ball of string  ... admit it you have one of those ball of strings in there.
You could string up a 100 turkeys and still have half of that ball of string left so today we are going to use it in our crafts!
This is what I did:
1.  cut off a length of string.
2.  press the string into any craft paint you have in your craft area.
3.  place the painted string in what I like to call waves or half circles down your paper ... or in my case my journal page.
4.  close the journal ... hold it closed fairly tightly then ... PULL the string straight out of the closed journal.
5.  open the journal and see the fun "trumpet" like shape flowers that form.  each time you do this technique the design will look a little different.

Art journal wk#52 - endings/beginnings

week #52
theme: Endings and Beginnings
stamps used:  Stamping Up
In the idea of keeping it simple I stamped the ladies on separate piece of cardstock and layered onto colored cardstock.  stamped the squiggle background image with the same color I colored the ladies then over stamped the saying with black ink.
This is the last layout for this art journal.  I'm proud of myself (even if I do say so myself) for finishing the whole year!  hope you have enjoyed this journey with me.

Art Journal wk#51 Trees

Week #51 - Trees
stamps used:  Stampscapes
Kept this theme of trees black and white.  Went into my Stampscapes draw to look for images with trees ... big and small.  started out stamping the cabin in the woods then added some extra evergreen trees and a bare limb hanging off the top of the page.  The second side of the layout just has bare limbs hanging out all over the page with a swarm of birds flying in the air.
Toward the end of this journal I did start to keep it simple but sometimes simple is the way to go.  I knew if I kept trying to be artsy with different techniques and such I would have never finished this project and I did want to finish it.  don't get me wrong I still have a couple other art journals with techniques and only half full so they will be continuous but for this journal it is done and I am happy I followed thru the whole year.  Last pages will be shown very soon.

Art Journal wk#50 Quotes

week #50 Quotes
stamps used:  Paula Best Einstein group
Almost done showing all my pages from this year long art journal challenge.  Looked in my stash of rubber stamps and found these quotes from Einstein and thought ... there I go ... quotes for my art journal.  First I swiped on some color then got out one of my many alphabet stamp sets and spelled out quotes.  stamped the quotes on white cardstock and layered onto black and green cardstocks then adhered to pages.  did a little doodling around the quotes and done.

Art journal week#48 Splash

stamps used:  Stampscapes
Week #48 theme: Splash
I guess because these layouts are toward the end of the year I kept them simple.  Color palate is blue for this theme ... nothing out of the ordinary there and water theme stamps.  The stencils used on the left page is a design stencil that I have in my stash and I thought it looked like waves.
That's all there is for today.  Thank you for stopping by ... see you again soon.

Art journal wk# 47 Thanksgiving

stamps used:  Altenew stamps
simple two page layout for Thanksgiving theme using this wonderful leaf layering stamp set from Altenew.  I had to use green inks first, of course then for the second page layout I used rust and yellow inks.  stamp the sayings from the same stamp set and done!

Art Journal week #46 clowns

week #46 - Clowns
Clowns is not my favorite theme but I went for it by grabbing a couple of images off the internet.  Why, do you ask did I not stamp?  I'll tell you in all my vast collection of stamps there is not one clown image.  But if you look closely you will see I did sample something.  do you see it yet?  the stitch circle is a stamp that I made into balloons by drawing the string with the bow.
BTW who remembers watching BOZO the clown on T.V. when you were a child?  I do!  Have fun.
Happy New Year!

Art journal adventure wk#44 eyes and #45 birds

Two more weeks added to my yearly art journal.
Left side - week #44 theme Eyes
I started this page by just brayering some green paint ... I'll tell you a secret... I brayered the paint because I really started this page with an idea that I would draw my own eyes.  Well, that didn't work and if you look close you will see a hand drawn eye under the green paint.  So then of course, I went to my stamps and found an old cube stamp with these eyes in squares.  after that I went into my stash of papers and found a sheet with what look like postage stamps of eyes so there you have my eye themed page.
Right side - week #45 theme Birds
First I stamped two birds of which I had hand carved a couple of years ago.  why I used a rust color is beyond me .... just happen to be handy.  then back to that stash of papers where I found the postage eyes; I found bird postage so why not just continue with added it to my birds page.
thank you for stopping by.  more of my art journal pages to follow.

art journal adventure wk #42 puzzled #43 outward from the center

I have been lacking in showing my art journal so here are a couple of layouts.

Left side theme is puzzled.  I used an old tool called Tiles template and yes, this one is of a puzzle.  I laid out the plastic puzzle piece then one by one removed a piece and stippled color.....till all the pieces of the template were colored on the page.  I stamped a big octopus with grey ink, saying with black ink and shells with green ink to finish the page.

Right side theme is outward from the center so I just drew a spiral starting in the center out to the page edge.  not fancy just done.

Art journal week #40 Triangles and #41 Halloween

wk #40 (left side) Triangles
stamp used:  Just For Fun faux post cube
Stamped the triangle side three times to create a fun tree.  drew in a tree trunk, added some color with Pebbles chalks.  Oh, yes also drew a snow hill at the bottom of each of the trees and sponged on some more of the chalks.  easy peasy!
wk #41 (right side) Halloween
stamps used:  Just For Fun
stamped the spider web with grey ink down the page making sure to connect each one.  spiders were stamped with black ink along with "Beware"...Happy Halloween was stamped with grey ink.  The coffin was stamped on brown cardstock then fussy cut ..... stamped the bones hand on white cardstock and fussy cut them, then glued them inside the coffin.  glued the coffin with bones hands on the journal page.  got out a blending tool and added some dark spooky color along the page to finish it off.

Art Journal week #38 Abundance and #39 Changing seasons

wk #38 (left side) Abundance
stamps used:  Penny Black
Stamped the saying in the bottom corner first then got out some fun bright color inks, and randomly stamped the butterflies.  simple and sweet.
wk #39 (right side) Changing seasons
stamps used:  Stamps by Judith leaf, Fred Mullett maple leaves, Stamp Francisco face, SU leaf w/punch
The square on the bottom with face and leaves is left over from another project so I figured why not use it!  stamped the leaves along the left side just for fun.  all the words are hand written.

Art Journal wk #36 Wing It and #37 Trash to treasure

week #36 (left side) Wing It
stamps used:  Joggles bird, MFP wings/sayings
week #37 (right side) Trash to treasure
I have been very bad with sharing my art journal pages from the weekly challenge I am participating in for the year.  So it is time to start playing catch up here.
wk #36 Wing It page
first I stamped the wings with grey ink a few times on the page.  blended some color with distress inks on separate piece of cardstock and over stamp the wings on it.  fussy cut the wings and adhered to the page.  stamped bird on separate piece of cardstock, added some color with blending tool and distress inks.  stamped the bird a second time on some pattern paper and did some paper piecing.  set her (the bird) aside stamped bigger wings on some of the left over cardstock I blended distress ink on to and fussy cut the big wings out and adhered to page.  adhered bird over the big wings.  stamped a couple of the sayings on the page and called it a day for this page.
wk #37 Trash to treasure
Now for this page I did all die cuts I had left over from other projects.  simple but to the point.
I have a small plastic container on my table with left over pieces ... whether they are die cuts, stamped images or whatever....and I have them in front of me so if I need it I have it.

Art Journal wk#35 Collage

week #35 - Collage
stamps used:  Stamper's Anon., dylusions, MFP
Yeah! for me.  I'm all caught up again for my art journal challenge.  this week is collage which sometimes for me a bit out of my comfort zone but I like the way this page turned out.  I looked around my craft table and just used what was there so first I glued down a piece of printed deli paper.  This deli paper is used as placemats at a restaurant in MA that friends and I ate at when we were away for a weekend.  next I glued on some stamped images I had colored and fussy cut that are in a container on my table.  I added some washi tape because let's face it we all have rolls of it!  last I stamped the umbrella...colored it in with chalks....stamped clouds but they were getting lost so I paper pieced them to make them pop.  done and done!

Art journal wk#34 - Mosaic/Patchwork

week #34 - Mosaic/Patchwork
For this art journal page I just added pieces of backgrounds I had created and pieces of pattern papers.  Believe it or not there is no stamping whatsoever on this page!  the two words are just hand written.
that's it for this page.....very different for me...out of my comfort zone but sometimes that works.

Art Journal wk#33 - fairy tales

stamps used:  Her Majesty (The Queens Ink)
We are at week #33 already and I'm actually caught up just haven't post all of them, yet.  I have two more to post after this one to be up to date...will do that this week so you will be bombarded with my art journal pages for the rest of the week.
week #33 prompt was Fairy Tales or mythology
I choice to do the Queen of Hearts and the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland.  I stamped my images in VersaFine onyx black ink then got out my trusty stipple brush to add some color around the images.  simple but I think effective.
thanks for stopping by today.

Art Journal wk # 32 - water

week # 32 Water
stamps used:  Fred Mullett, StampaRosa, StarvingArtiststamps
stencil: Simon Says wave stencil
I am liking the simple journal pages I'm doing lately since this challenge is a year long one.  For this water prompt I stamped this beautiful if you can call an octopus beautiful ... yes, I can.  Anyway I stamped him with black ink then did the wave stencil all around him.  stamped the two sayings and called it a day.
